Get More Calcium...with Inulin!

Inulin (not to be confused with the hormone insulin) is a natural dietary fiber common in many foods that is not digested or absorbed. Because of this, it has a zero glycemic index and produces no effect on blood sugar levels – even though it has a pleasantly sweet and creamy taste.

Research shows that inulin fiber helps to boost friendly bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, promoting good digestive health. It also boosts calcium absorption and may help strengthen your bones.

A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition involving 59 girls – ages 11 through 14 – examined how well calcium was absorbed with and without inulin in the diet. During the first three weeks, the girls drank calcium-fortified orange juice containing either inulin or a placebo as part of a 1,500-milligram calcium diet. Following a two-week break, the girls repeated the study, with the inulin group receiving the placebo and vice versa.

While on the placebo, the girls absorbed 416 mg of the calcium in their diet. While taking the supplemental inulin, the girls absorbed 18 percent more calcium from their diet, on average. Their calcium absorption increased from 416 mg to 494 mg, the equivalent amount that would be absorbed from a seven ounce serving of milk.

Inulin is naturally found in onions, asparagus, leeks, garlic, artichokes, bananas, wheat, rye, barley, and chicory. Wellness Bakeries includes six grams of high-purity inulin fiber in every Chocolate Bliss Cake.
