Wellness Bakeries uses an ingredient called oat fiber in every Chocolate Bliss Cake. Oat fiber comes from the outside bran of the oat. And because it absorbs up to seven times its weight in water, it helps to ensure that our cakes stay moist and delicious. Oat fiber also imparts a pleasant, creamy mouthfeel.
And because it is so rich in… well, fiber… it increases your feeling of fullness and reduces hunger – just another reason why Chocolate Bliss Cake is so pleasantly satisfying.
Oat fiber is also one of the richest sources of a unique soluble fiber called beta-glucan. Your body doesn’t have the enzymes necessary to digest this special fiber, but that’s a good thing! Instead, beta-glucan is broken down by fermentation in your digestive tract. This fiber is the perfect food for the friendly bacteria in your intestines, and it strongly stimulate the growth of these pro-biotic warriors.
Numerous clinical studies also demonstrate a strong correlation between beta-glucan in the diet and reduced cholesterol. These studies show that oat beta-glucan can significantly reduce harmful LDL cholesterol while raising desirable HDL. These findings led the FDA to approve a health claim stating that the soluble fiber from oats may reduce the risk of heart disease.
How does it work? Well, as the viscous beta-glucan passes through your digestive tract it binds tightly to cholesterol and helps to carry it from your body. Studies also show that oat beta-glucan helps to regulate blood glucose levels in much the same way. By binding with starches and carbohydrates, beta-glucan delays the digestion and uptake of glucose, which lowers blood sugar and helps to reduce insulin levels.
In fact, one study showed that when 11 grams of oat beta-glucan were added to 50 grams of glucose, the glycemic response was reduced by a whopping 60 percent!
Perhaps most importantly, studies show that beta-glucan could boost your immune system. Oat beta-glucan is known to strongly stimulate the production of white blood cells (such as phagocytes, neutrophils) – the cells your body uses to devour bacteria, mutated cells and other invaders.
And while science still doesn’t understand why or how this happens, studies clearly show that when you consume beta-glucan these immune cells are more active and more effective in attacking what doesn’t belong in your body. One study even showed that dietary beta-glucan doubled the number of macrophage cells within 24 hours!
