If you’ve been to your favorite cupcake shop recently, you may have stumbled on a new trend in the bakery world: Frosting shots.
What is a frosting shot? It’s exactly what it sounds like. A shot glass filled with the same thick and creamy frosting used to ice cakes and cupcakes, minus the cake part.
Many popular bakeries serve up these creamy, decadent treats to frosting lovers (who believe the cake is the optional part of the dessert). And while a sweet shot of your favorite frosting may sound heavenly, it does have one major downside…
Little Frosting Shots, Big Troubles with Trans Fats and Sugar
Since most frosting is usually made of sugar and fat (often commercial shortening, which is pure trans fat), what you’re getting in that diminutive shot glass is not as harmless as it seems. In fact, that much added sugar in one sitting is more than you should be eating in a day!
Let’s take a look at the sugar in a frosting shot. ..
A two ounce shot of chocolate buttercream frosting made with powdered sugar and shortening – which is enough to fill a shot glass – has almost 30 grams of sugar. That’s about 6 teaspoons of sugar you’re downing in the few seconds you’re taking to enjoy your frosting shot.
Not only does this amount of sugar dramatically raise your blood sugar and insulin levels – contributing to chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and more – but shortening is one of the worst types of fat you can ingest.
The reason: Shortening is made from trans fats, which clog arteries, promote inflammation, and can promote heart disease, cancer, and other life threatening illnesses.
And if the frosting shots are made with “vegan shortening”… that is trans fat free? You’re still getting a whopping dose of highly processed, omega-6 fats that promote dangerous inflammation in the body.
Are those sweet shots of frosting worth all that? We think not!
Healthy Frosting Shots: Chock Full of Antioxidants, Healthy Fats (And Sugar Free!)
The good news is that we’ve given the traditional frosting shot a healthy makeover – and we promise it is still as sweet and creamy as your favorite bakery shot.
Here’s the difference: Our frosting shots are made with heart healthy coconut milk, grass fed butter, and our luxurious chocolate ganache – which is sugar free and full of rich chocolate flavor from sustainable, non-dutched, organic cocoa powder.
These simple ingredients will turn out frosting shots that have just one gram of sugar per serving, but still have that creamy texture and sweet flavor you love.
The best part is that these frosting shots aren’t just “not bad for you”, but that they actually pack a powerful nutritional punch!
First, they’re rich in medium chain triglycerides (MCTS) – thanks to the coconut milk. These healthy fats are burned by the liver for energy – not stored as fat. Studies show that eating a diet rich in MCTs can boost metabolism, improve blood sugar balance, benefit heart disease and even protect against fatty liver.
Next, these sweet indulgent shots are packed with antioxidant-rich organic cocoa. Antioxidants protect against the cellular damage that leads to physical aging and can turn healthy cells cancerous. And because we use ONLY organic cocoa that has not been “alkalized” (a chemical process that reduces cocoa’s antioxidant value by half!) you can rest assured that you’re getting the most antioxidant bang per delicious, chocolaty frosting shot!
Oh, and did I mention – they are ridiculously simple to make! The next time you’re having a party, you can whip these up in 10 minutes. How’s that for an easy, elegant and healthy treat your guests will love!
We start with some simple ingredients: 2 packets Wellness Bakeries Chocolate Ganache, 1/2 cup canned coconut milk (we like Native Forest Original since it’s BPA free), a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract, and 8 ounces softened grass fed salted butter (such as Kerrygold or Organic Valley Pasture Butter)
First, add the coconut milk, vanilla, and ganache packets to a saucepan over medium low heat. Stir until the ganache is dissolved. Let cool slightly.
Next transfer the cooled mixture to a mixer bowl, and add the butter. Beat on high speed for about 2 minutes, until it’s fluffy.
If you can’t wait to taste it, grab a spoon and have at it. Otherwise, pipe into shot glasses, and serve with dessert spoons.
Oh, and get creative! Try adding a teaspoon of mint extract for Mint Chocolate Frosting Shots…a teaspoon of coconut extract for German Chocolate Frosting Shots… or an ounce of bourbon for slightly boozy “Happy Hour” Frosting Shots.
